Unless, you’re crammed into a room crowded with all of your finest belongings. Let’s face it, organization can be tough- especially if you’re sharing a flat with 3 other people. It’s up to you to make the best use out of your own personal space. Check out these tips to help you maximize your space to create a room you can enjoy on the daily.

1. Take advantage of hidden space. Aka, don’t be scared of the monsters under your bed. Plastic containers are a great way to organize and store belongings and also fit perfectly under your bed without looking cluttered. This can free up a lot of floor space and reduce the need for further storage around your room.

2. Utilise walls like a pro: Think vertical. Consider which items can be cleared off the floor and onto the walls. For mirrors, opt for hanging wall mirrors instead of ones that sit on the floor. Hanging file folders are very useful for getting items off your surfaces, such as papers which need organizing. Hanging bulletin boards or magnetic boards can do the same trick, and are also useful for sticking reminders, lists, plans, and pictures. Make use of the back of your door by installing hooks to hang coats, sweaters, bags or belts.

3. Reduce your bed size: None of us could have imagined the day we’d downgrade back to a bed where one’s toes can touch the baseboard, but alas, here we are. Just kidding (or am I?) Let’s face it, your bed takes up majority of space in your room and this can be reduced by settling for a smaller bedframe. If you want a less claustrophobic space, the California Kind sized bed dreams may have to be put to sleep for now.

4. Loft your bed: Maximize every inch of your room by raising your bed on a loft. This is a great way to use vertical space- creating extra storage, an area for your desk, or even a closet. You can cover the area with a nice curtain to dress things up, leaving your room serene and clutter free.

5. Install shelving. Having personal décor and memorabilia around your room can making it a lot more personal, but it can also create clutter if left unorganized. To keep items in viewpoint without getting in the way of things, install some shelves! This will leave your floor space more open, and you’ll finally have a spot to put that birthday card your grandma sent you.

6. Declutter: It doesn’t take much to overwhelm a smaller space. This can be easily avoided by simply decluttering your items. Sort what you truly need, versus things you may just want to keep around. Donate old clothes, throw out useless papers, and get rid of the odd boxes laying around. Not only will this create more space in your room, but it will actually feel good internally to clear your surroundings. You can even raise money by selling used clothes or furniture- better yet, donate them to people in need. This company conveniently offers free and fast home collections, picking up unwanted clothes, shoes and more directly from your door, taking them directly to the charity.

7. Hang bulky items up on hooks. Larger items, such as suitcases, may be too big to store under your bed or in your closet. Solution: Hang them up on your wall. This is perfect for those who don’t have access to extra storage space outside of the bedroom.

8. Swap for a futon or sofa bed: In a small bedroom, being multifunctional is key. A futon or a sofa bed provides a bed and sofa in one. This can help transform a small bedroom into a den, or office space and a bedroom. This is also great if you want to have friends over, but don’t want to hang out in a living room shared with flatmates.

9. Maximize your closet space. Closets can be considerably underrated. When you first glance at an open space with nothing but a metal rod, it makes closets seem limited to storing only items that can be thrown on a hanger. But with proper love and care, your closet can become an exceptional storage space.

Install a hanging shelf: While these organizers are perfect for storing folded clothes, they can also be useful for organizing shoes. Easily attach them to a rod in your closet and say adios to falling-over stacks of shirts and sweaters.
Use makeshift boxes. Shoe boxes can be a similar, cheaper option to drawer organizers. Both can be used to hold loose items, such as socks, on a shelf.

Add another hanging rod: If you find you have excessive room in the bottom half of your closet, and you don’t have 20 pairs of shoes, adding another rod is an easy way to double your available hanging space.

Use the inside of the door: Installing hooks on the inside of the door will provide extra hanging space for items such as ties, scarves, coats, or even shoes.
