7 European City Breaks You Haven’t Thought Of

#2 – Sofia, Bulgaria

Bulgaria’s capital has had a turbulent past, and its landmarks reflect its Greek, Roman, Ottoman and Soviet occupation. A must-see is the neo-Byzantine Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, with its impressive domes and intricately decorated interior. Fashionistas head to Vitosha Boulevard – lined with high end fashion labels such as Versace, Dolce & Gabbana and Emporio Armani, and an abundance of cafes, restaurants and bars from which to enjoy the amazing view of the Vitosha mountain. For a dose of culture check out the Ivan Vazov National Theatre – built in 1909 by Viennese architects Helmer & Fellner, the neoclassical structure is majestic, and hosts an array of Bulgarian theatre.
